I am not waiting for the final box score for this recap, because in no way is this game about the players on the floor, this game was lost by the entire St. Bonaventure coaching staff.
Can someone please answer me the following question: Why were Andrew Nicholson and Mo Thomas sitting on the bench for nearly seven or eight minutes in the second half, after Nicholson had scored 12 points to open the half and Thomas had already registered a double double???? CAN ANYONE ANSWER THAT FOR ME?
Bonaventure had been beating the hell out of Fordham down on the blocks and in the paint, and after the Brown and White had rallied to take a five point lead, the two bigs came out of the game to return no time soon.
Meanwhile, Tyler Benson and D’Lancy Carter are getting serious clock in the critical moments of the game, just what I want to see.
In the closing possession, Malcolm Eleby beat his man off the dribble and then failed to convert a “bunny” layup that would have tied the game with nearly no time remaining; for Eleby, just another poor game in a career chalk full of them.
During the rest of the game, Bonaventure showed zero ability to stop the best freshman in the league Jio Fontan who absolutely torched the Bonnies for 25 points. Eventually, the staff figured out that Matthews and Eleby hadn’t a prayer of keeping this stud in front of them, so they switched to a 3-2 zone which did a nice job of taking Fordham out of their offense.Fordham scored a ton of points in transition where they consistently beat the Bonnies back.
Fordham shot a ridiculous 48% from the field during the game, showing us further that the Bonaventure defense is pretty poor at best. Nicholson finished with 16 and 6, but who knows how many he could have had if he didn’t play only 27 minutes. Thomas finished with 10 and 10, which he had with about ten minutes left in the game….
Oddly enough, Chris Matthews is the teams best point guard! Chris had 12 points tonight, but dished out 7 more assists, while the “actual” point guard Malcolm Eleby finished with 2 assists and 5 turnovers. Fantastic.
This team has some serious questions to answer as they head into Duquesne. They now have a tidy five game losing streak at home, are just 2-5 in the league, and are just one loss away from being tied with Fordham and Charlotte for 13th place in the league. Honestly, if we can’t get by Fordham on our own court, I do not have any confidence we will get anyone else this year…
That said, I know we will win another game or two somewhere (I hope) but this team needs to get it together if they have any real aspirations of getting to Atlantic City.
Leave your thoughts in the comments section, we’d love to hear them about this most frustrating loss…
